WIP Wednesday

Works in Progress Wednesday

I'm finally posting some pics of recent craft projects!

Girlie tutu for Isabelle's bday party - I have enough of the ribbon to do another one of these for Kira:

Scarves for FIL and SIL bday gifts:

kind of lacy for SIL:

a smidge more manly for FIL (he actually couldn't tell the difference between the two!):

I learned how to crochet from a friend who learned how from her dad. She didn't know the names of the stitches when she taught me, so I haven't been able to read a pattern. I thought I should go back and teach myself how to crochet. Derek brought home a book from the library and I have yet to find any of the stitches I currently use in the book. So, I don't know what it is I've been doing all this time! Ah well, I can make scarves and blankets with my crochet-sort-of technique.
Current WIPs:
  • I'm finishing up a baby blanket for my nephew's Christmas gift. It's crochet-sort-of.
  • I'm working on a checkers quilt for Jackson. I have the squares (64 of them!) all cut out (Thank you Kam and Teri so so so so so so much for the cutting mat and rotary blade!!). I need to sew the board itself and figure out how I want to do the border. I've never quilted before, so I thought this would be a good starter project.
  • I'm going to make a mini dress up kit for my niece (almost 4) - with a tutu, superhero cape, and magic wand.

That's all the Christmas I've started so far. If you're doing a handmade Christmas, I'd love to hear how your projects are going!

  1. Wendy,
How about crocheting on sport socks (like I did on the anklets) to make sleep-sox? I just might have a bead or two and some yarn if you want to try it. (Mom)

  2. those are great!

I really liked the stitch & bitch book for knitting. I know she has a crochet book too. Maybe look for that one? It's called Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker.

I am totally failing at handmade Christmas so far. Oh well.

  3. Wendy,
Those are great gift ideas! I think I will have to break down and learn to sew so I can make that "dress-up kit." I have an almost 4 year-old niece, too, and she would love it! I've had a sewing machine since I got married, but have never tried it. Your gifts have inspired me! Thanks!!

  4. Wendy,
A couple of friends of mine want to learn the basic crochet stitches. I'll have to pick a SUnday afternoon and have y'all over.

WEnt ahead and started nephew's treasure bag since he is here now and my sis can just take it home with her.

    Completed:
2 bookmarks for granpa and aunt (one more to go)
    rag rug for another granpa
stuffed fruit and veggies for nephews

    To go:
    apron for nephew
    homemade "journal" for niece
    embroidered pillow for grandmother
unknown project for last set of grandparents

For kids, it will be a stuffed pig, a stuffed elephant, and 2 Mo Willems' "Elephant and Piggie" books.

We need a mamma craft day!!!

  5. Great projects- the tutu is so pretty! I love handmade gifts, but I don't know if my family likes receiving them as much as I like making things. I hope to make Sean and Aidan knit hats and another pair of pants for Ella. Not necessarily as gifts, though.

My mom crochets and I never tried to learn from her. That's so funny that you learned your own method and not by the books. Hopefully you can figure out pattern reading and expand your crafts.

  6. Wow! You are so talented! And I decided to comment even though there's no way I'm making anything handmade for Christmas. Because nobody would want what I made. But I love looking at your stuff! Especially the tutu- how impressive. Have you ever considered selling those? (In your spare time?)
