Where were the peeps?

Get It Down; 31 for 21

I'll try to get pics up tomorrow. Today has ended up busier than expected. So instead, an observation.

I didn't see one person with Down syndrome, other than my daughter, during 9 hours at the State Fair yesterday. I really don't intentionally play spot-the-bonus-chromosome when we're out, but I do usually have an "ok, there she/he is" moment. And I like it. It makes me feel good to see Kira's peeps out and about in the community.

I'm not going to lie, in the past when I would see teens/adults out with their parents, I'd assume that they were together because they lived together. That the parents were having to care for their adult child for all of their lives. But, I've decided to instead assume that the adult with Ds is visiting for the weekend, or home from college, or having to take care of their parents in their old age. I like it better that way.

So, anyway, not one T21 spotting! I couldn't believe it.

Now back to your regularly scheduled weekend.

  1. It's very rare for me to see anyone with DS anywhere. Maybe I just don't notice, or maybe they're just not around.

  2. That is interesting, but just within the past two weeks I have seen 1 Ds child at our neighborhood Mc'Donalds with her grandmother. I was observing her playing as I was there with Gwynny and Lily on our weekly Fun Friday outing. The grandma and I got to talking and I found out the little girl Maggie was 4 and had recently moved here with her family. It was such a lovely conversation and I know what you mean about feeling good about it. I have to admit though that many times I also have been out and I feel like the outsider because no one with Ds is out and about. Just know that you are not alone. Kira has plenty of peeps out there even if you can't see us, we are always here for you.

  3. We usually see someone with DS at the fair. My girls are pros at spotting extra DNA. Better than me.

When Goldie was a baby, I remember taking them to vacation bible school and looking at the 100+ kids and wondering where are the kids with DS? Its been two years and I still haven't found them. Maybe Goldie will be the first!
